Lake Harriet was originally named “Mde Unma” by the Dakota, which translates to “Other Lake.”
But in the 1800s, the lake was renamed in honor of Harriet Lovejoy, the wife of Colonel Henry Leavenworth at Fort Snelling.
In 1885, the lake’s owner, Colonel William S. King, donated it to the city of Minneapolis.
