Little Canada

Welcome to Little Canada, MN

Located in Ramsey County, Little Canada is an inner-ring suburb of the Twin Cities. While it’s a smaller suburb of only around 10,000 people, it’s location and proximity to downtown St. Paul is unbeatable. Residents can easily take I-35E  and be at their destination in just a few minutes, making commuting a snap. Little Canada is bordered to the north by Vadnais Heights and Interstate 694, Roseville, to the west, and Maplewood to the south and east.

The History of Little Canada

Originally settled in 1844 by Benjamin Gervais, a French-Canadian man who purchased land north of St. Paul in order to open the first independently owned grist mill (where grain is ground into flour) in Minnesota. He named the township New Canada in 1858, though it didn’t incorporate until 1953. Due to the sprawl of nearby communities, including Maplewood and Rosewood, New Canada incorporated into a village in 1953, then became a city in 1974. Gervais Lake on the eastern side of town was named for its founder.

Unlike much of the surrounding suburbs, growth in Little Canada real estate was a bit slower. While most towns saw massive growth between 1950 and 1970, this suburb actually saw their population double between 1970 and 1980. This is reflected in the homes for sale, which include ramblers, split levels, and townhomes.
